809: CSV formatting problem detected
Rejects the file also shown as EBA.809
Official text
CSV formatting problem detected
How it appears in feedback
[filename],,,809, CSV formatting problem detected.,'utf-8' codec can't decode byte [value] in position [value] invalid start byteUnexpected number of columns in row [value][EBA.809] CSV file [csv file name]: Could not determine delimiter
What triggers it
A table CSV cannot be parsed row by row: data rows have more or fewer cells than the header (missing or extra commas, unquoted commas inside names), the file is not UTF-8, or the file is completely empty (no header). Added 1 May 2025 so that filers see the real cause instead of a wall of 807s.
A data row has more or fewer cells than the header. Usually a missing comma, a stray trailing comma, or an unquoted comma inside a name.
Templates: any b_xx.xx.csv
How to fix it
Quote any string containing a comma with double quotes; make header and every row the same width; UTF-8; keep at least the header row in every file.
Quote any value that contains a comma ("Smith, Jones & Co") and make every row the same width as the header.
